Ascot United (A)

Post by Red army »

Well that was an extremely disappointing result and performance after Tuesday’s night late equaliser. Just when I think we are starting to look like a side on the up we go and put in a performance that is happened far to often this season.
The Jordan Ibe experiment has come to an end for me, absolutely woeful until the point he was subbed and shaking hands with his marker who had the easiest game of his career. Delroy demanding more from him and he just waving his arms about. Hasn’t done enough for me to warrant a start and substitute performances have been poor at best. Was easily the worst player on the pitch.

Created very little first half and fortunate to go in 0-0. Hippolyte effort blazed wide just inside the area. Few corners comfortably dealt with. Ascot looked far more likely to score, few chances dragged wide and an over hit cross that bounced off the bar. Wat chance for Ascot close range effort fired over the bar, Juliusz Pazio save with his feet late on kept the score at 0-0.

Much the same second half struggling to get any real rhythm into our game. Struggling to break down organised defence. Then 2 similiar goal 3 minutes apart ultimately ended the unbeaten away league run. Keano isolated on both occasions backing into the box and letting 2 crosses flash across the box, both resulted in goals and thoroughly deserved in all honesty. Was it a coincidence that ibe was subbed for Cole Brown and we finally looked to play with tempo and urgency. Cole Brown cross just out of reach for Herson Alves, another cross from the right Herson Alves back post tried a pass but out of play. Sippetts dragged us back into the game Adrian Clifton chest down and ball over his head, Sippetts pace beyond the defenders nodded into his own path once again tucked away under the keeper. Hippolyte burst into the area from the left chops back inside goes down under a rash challenge looked like a penalty but referee waved play on. Long throw from the right ball bounced to Sippetts couldn’t connect properly and cleared away. Still vulnerable on the counter but gave it a go final 15 but too little to late in the end.

Mom Adrian Clifton put in a real shift and held the ball up well playing slightly deeper with Sippetts as strike partner. Think there could be a decent partnership in time between the two of them. Sippetts caused problems with his direct approach and pace. Probably the only positive in the game.
Definitely need to iron out these below average performances to make the play offs come seasons end.

League starting to take some shape and looks like Farnham and kingstonian the front runners and any of 10 teams for play off spots.

Our next seven games aren’t the most favourable of fixtures either.

A mixture of fodder and also play off chasers. Based on yesterday would only see us getting 9. But this is where the play-offs and the teams around us hopefully drop points as we done OK. Until yesterday 1 defeat in 9 or something but it was lacklustre.

Badshot H
Leatherhead H
Hanworth A
Raynes Park H
Westfield A
Ashford H
Met Police A

Tuesday we cannot afford to turn up to the game thinking the game has already been won otherwise we will lose. Leatherhead not an easy fixture. Hanworth Raynes Park and Westfield is the run that stands out for me. Raynes Park are a lot of peoples play off favourites. Let’s see what they’re all about. Met Police we never ever do well there. Free hit for us if we pick up something.

First let me get the grumbles out of the way.

The ground at Ascot is a joke. KIds running all over the place, hardly any room behind either goal, floodlights so poor that it was impossible to see the ball when it was launched forward. It feels like watching a game at a sports centre with a creche attached.

Onto the football. My criticism of the management team in this particular game is that we waited far too long make any changes. We actually waited to go two goals down. Now I understand the absence of Hinds and Hercules has disrupted us a bit given their respective form but the answer to the riddle was not the play Hippolyte and Ibe on the wings in what sort of looked like a 4-4-2 (or perhaps a 4-4-1-1 for those tactical snobs).

It was actually really easy to see what to do at half time. We had not played especially well but it was still 0-0. This was the time to make a change. Take off the aforementioned wide men and change to 3-5-2. Bring on Cole Brown on the right and Rocky/Gabby/Hani in the middle of the park. This would have given the Ascot coaching staff something to think about. We are risking the loss of a talented young player in Rocky Williams for the vanity project in the shape of Jordon Ibe. It does not make any sense to me why we have persevered with the experiment after the Guernsey debacle.

The last three goals we have conceded (one at Uxbridge and two yesterday) have all been depressingly similar. Keano is far too exposed without either Cole or Wraynel offering some protection. It is surprising that those far more qualified than me cannot see that for themselves.

The main positive were the signs of a blossoming partnership between Clifton and Sippetts with the latter looking like a danger with his pace and good finishing. Let's hope that we can get a win on Tuesday as the next run of games look tough.

Insightful, thanks.

I'd noticed the problem of teams "overloading" down one side and whoever is playing (usually right) full-back being left torn between challenging the player with the ball or his teammate about to receive the ball. A central defender can come across but that just leaves another gap, someone in midfield needs to be offering more support. Keano and Cole have both suffered from having too much to do.

As for Jordan Ibe I haven't seen all his games and am not party to whatever happened or not regarding Guernsey (less said the better perhaps) but initially he looked skillful, reasonably fit, keen but didn't quite fit in the team, taking on too much, Hassan Jalloh style. Nothing that a few games couldn't put right though. Against Horndean he didn't really get much service as we were backs-to-the-wall defending by the time he came on. Rocky Williams, yes I'd like him to get his chances but I'd hope we can stick with Jordan and just find the key to get his talent working for the team.
