Victory at Leatherhead

Post by Mr Heinstein »

So, Leatherhead's last game was a 3-0 win at Porchester. Ours was a 5-0 defeat at Porchester. Football arithmetic pointed to an 8-0 drubbing.

Leatherhead had lost all of three games all season. We'd mustered three away victories in that time. Last time we met, less said the better...

But against all odds HYUFC came through for the result of the season.

Well done to team and management, making the playoffs is going to be tough, but it looks do-able after that result.

A fantastic win indeed! Well done to all the players and staff. So typically HYUFC too - winning games when all the odds are stacked against us.

Just hoping now that we can turn a corner after the mini-blip and go on a run to secure the playoffs. It's going to be a tough ask but there's a lot of football still to be played. If Portchester start to drop some points, then anything can happen.

Best 90 minute performance I’ve seen under the new management team. Tactics and organisation on different levels to the away defeat at Portchester, makes it even more frustrating. New man, new ideas I guess you’re going to get some inconsistent performances between now and the end of the season. More performances to this level and play offs could be possible!!!

Leatherhead had the chance of the game, United defence appealing for an offside flag that never came, luckily forward could only drag his tame effort wide. Nice interchange of passes from Nasha, Hayles to set Hay skipping away down the right, his low cross found Harry Grant arriving on cue, but could only steer his effort over from 8yds out. Hinds finding some space on the left, snap shot over the bar. United deserved the lead just after the half hour mark, Hayles tight control on the right wing skipping past few tackles, laid of to Nasha who in turn steers a pass to Mason on half way, he finds Hinds level with the 18yds box, driving at the isolated full back, stepping inside 2/3 challenges across the box, when level with the penalty spot, fierce right footed drive back across the keeper through a crowd of players. Leatherhead came into the game more as the half wore on, few crosses punched clear by Foster, and smart save with his legs, turned away a low effort out for a corner late on in the half. Ht 0-1

2nd half started poorly for United, 47th minute deep cross from the home sides left, found ex United man Cameron Black rising highest to nod down into the 6yd box, Leatherhead man reacting first to tap home. In all fairness United reacted well to the set back, rode out some home side possession and looked dangerous on the counter. Leatherhead created a few good chances, long pass behind Mason and him beaten for pace, Tanners forward strikes the base of the post and eventually cleared. Another chance went begging for home side, Foster saving with his legs rebound effort cleared off the line by Louis Rogers, and the a final shot bundled wide. United gradually settled down and started to cause th home side some issues, cross from Hay, Hinds nodding back across goal to Matthews his header dribbling wide. Inside left of the area defenders backing off Hinds his shot turned over by the keeper. Hay intercepted a misplaced pass in midfield, driving toward the edge of the box, rising drive comfortably saved. Grant fizzed a left footed effort just wide. Time ticking down Jordi on as a sub, holds of 2 challenges just outside the box, forces the ball into the area, Harry Grant bearing down on goal, little dink over the diving keeper for 1-2. Last 10 minutes was seeing off a few Leatherhead crosses but no real concerns bar some optimistic shouts for a penalty. Ft 1-2

Mom hard to choose all played their part, I’ll go for Ben Purcell screened the back 4 really well making clearances and tidy on the ball from start to finish.

More consistent performances till the end of the season would be acceptable for me. Play offs would be bonus from the position we find ourselves in!!!
