Got a good track record though. Got them promoted from combined counties, won the FA vase. What's the worst that could happen?

Yes indeed. As I said he has a good record. I believe he's a step in the right direction and if he achieves a play off place but not promotion (although coats4goalposts sees this as failure) it's still a step forward. Let's get behind him and the team.
