One step forward and two steps back at present. Never looked like winning the game in all fairness. Even for first half hour but always looked like conceding!!!
Away record (league only) is pretty dire:
Won 2 drew 2 lost 3 GF 10 GA 20 GD -10 8 pts
Home record (league only) vast contrast:
Won 5 lost 1 GF 17 GA 5 GD +12 15pts
Missing Calum Duffy and Louis Rogers last of his 3 match ban.
Blame the defence is easy I guess, Bruce Gough 17 at centre back is tough ask for a young kid against a team like Bognor who constantly ask questions of you defensively/physically
Either down the sides or into space in the channels.
They had a goal chalked off within the opening 2 minutes, offside the call. We took the lead with an absolute pearler from Ben Purcell, worked space down the left, Hinds into Purcell who was invited to shoot from 25yds, right footed rocket in off the underside of the bar. Didn’t last long though, Flaherty missed place pass in midfield, one pass gets the winger free against Hay, into the box, tangle of legs penalty given. Watkins went the right way but 1-1.
Chances created for both sides, Flaherty standing up a cross from the right, Kaunda middle of the goal header just over, Hinds down the right into Hayles he shoots over from acute angle. Long pass misread by the defender, Kaunda onto it in a flash, pulls the trigger right footed just inside the area waist high, keeper fine save deflecting it over with an outstretched left hand. Bognor also had chances in the opening 30 minutes. Their second came on 28minutes, deep cross headed back across goal, Josh Odell headed clearance straight up in the air, challenges again and loses out, balls falls for striker who swivels right footed past Watkins with no chance. 2 should have been 3 minutes later, poor pass from Miskin, interception and first time ball had the United defence wide open, luckily striker shoots wide of the far post. Again lose the ball in midfield another forward pass, this time Watkins saves at the feet of striker, ball bounces on the edge of the box, Bognor player reacts first his short takes a wicked deflection, Watkins scrambling backwards but unable to prevent it from going in. 3-1Ht Kaunda off injured replaced by Ryan Ewhare just before half time.
Crated the first chance of the half, neat build up Flaherty pass dissects the Bognor rearguard, Hinds one touch to many enables the defender to block his shot out for a corner. And that was about us few half chances, 82nd minute Onabanjo warmed the palms of the keeper, who fumbled his effort round the post. Change of formation to 5 helped us defensively but curbed our attacking threat, Bognor set pieces a constant threat all evening and managed the second half without to much difficulty, deserved the 3 points and had few half chances themselves during the half without adding to their first half tally.
Simon has to find a way to play away from home, even if it means dropping one of the four more attacking players (Hayles, Hinds, Flaherty, Kaunda) as soon as we lose the ball we are susceptible to a counter, defence to high with very little pace in defence????
McKnight gave us some control in midfield last season but struggling for fitness this season. Hay at right back is ok young and definitely some promise. Bruce Gough physically struggled, Josh Odell questions marks I’d say looks really nervous at times but still young and learning. Miskin second game so needs time to settle in.
Simon has a lot of work to do with this squad both tactically and personal wise for me, continue with this away from home form then we will be struggling to make play offs this year. Admittedly long way to go and probably see a fair few comings and goings between now and the rest of the season but as it stands right now we are a soft touch away from home.
Kingstonian game was perfect for us, they play so many passes sideways and rarely 2 passes forward, have plenty of possession but in areas of the pitch that doesn’t hurt you, or gives you time to get set again defensively.
Hendon home on Saturday, so that’s positive after 4 consecutive away games in the league. COYH
