Well first 3 points are on the board, that’s the main thing, especially after opening day result. Still a lot of work to do especially defensively.
We seemed on edge defensively throughout the first half, we had plenty of possession and definitely looked like scoring on numerous occasions. Tyler Hayles looked bright and Jack McKnight bombing forward at every opportunity. Sam Ashton held the ball up well which allowed the midfield to join in.
Louis Rodgers was a very lucky boy not to be sent off, long kick from the keeper allowed to bounce over his head was in trouble, striker wrong side clear through on goal, and definitely pulled him back think it’s a red card but the officials were extremely poor all evening for both sides.
United scored a very good first goal, Ashton held the ball up deep in his own half, lay of to Olorunfermi maybe, his pass set Sani free driving forward to the edge of Egham box, slides the ball to McKnight just inside the area, his shot beats the keeper to his right. Counter attack football with pace which we severely lacked last season. Dealt with Egham’s long throws and corners pretty well all night. We still look susceptible to pace in our final third. New back 4 this season so hopefully we can get better as the season progresses.
2nd half pretty dominant, Egham long balls caused us less and less of a threat. Comical disallowed goal, which was probably right decision in the end, but think the officials guessed in all honesty and partly influenced by the away keeper making no attempt to stop the ball, when Amos tapped home.
Created chances but needed the 2nd goal to wrap the game up, Sani missed 2 good ones, Hayles near post keeper saved, Hayles again inside the box but shot crowded out after poor first touch. 2nd did eventually come but a lot later than we would have liked, through ball from Newton in behind, substitute Ryan Ewhare pace gets him their first, heavy first touch drew the keeper from his line but Ewhare slipped the ball through his legs for 2-0. Egham red card made things slightly easier with 20/25 to go but we looked comfortably for most of the second half.
Mom Tyler Hayles looked bright all evening and could have had a brace.
Overall decent performance but still a lot to work on, if the aim is champions or play offs come seasons end.
